Do you have desires? Seriously, are there things you desire, or plans you desire or even paths of life you desire?
The Bible says in Psalm 37:4-5, "Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord trust in him and he will do this." I think a lot of times, we, even as Christians, read verse 4 and say, Well I desire it, so God will make it happen. I think though that we get the order confused. It says, delight yourself in the Lord then it says, he will give you the desires of your heart. So you're probably thinking, well I need to figure out how to delight then I will get what I want. I challenge you to look at that word - Delight. What does that mean? In Webster's Dictionary it says that the noun delight means a high degree of gratification, also joy or extreme satisfaction. Then if you look up joy, you will find, "a state of happiness". So how do we find our happiness in the Lord?
Let me ask you this, can you find happiness in something that you don't know? I think it requires relationship to find happiness in someone and therefore delight in them. I think what these verses are saying is spend time with Jesus, get to know Him on a personal level and allow Him to bring you joy, happiness and delight. Then when you can delight in Him. He will make those desires that you think are so important fade and He will give you new desires, His Desires.
See God has desires for us. But sometimes we're so busy trying to ask for our own desires, we neglect to get to know Him and see that He has desires for us that go above and beyond our wildest dreams. So can you delight yourself in the Lord and allow His desires to become the desires of your heart?
We must first delight in Him!
